Season 8 Road So Far #1
Supernatural Season 5 premiered on September 10th, 2009 and concluded on May 13th, 2010. It consisted of 22 episodes beginning with the episode "Sympathy for the Devil" and ending with the episode "Swan Song".
Supernatural creator Erik Kripke had intended for Season 5 to be the last season of the series. However, because of the overwhelming popularity and gigantic size of the fanbase, it has continued to be renewed and is now going into it's 9th season premiering on October 15th of 2013.
Season 5 begins with Lucifer being risen and the boys being trapped in the chapel where the rising occurred. After escaping, the Winchester brothers, Bobby Singer and the angel, Castiel, set out to stop the actual apacolypse. It is revealed that the Archangel Michael must fight his brother Lucifer. However, in order for this to occur, it must happen on earth as well as in heaven. Therefore, Dean is chosen as the human vessel for Michael, and Sam is chosen as the human vessel for Lucifer. However, angels cannot possess humans in the same fashion as demons can. Angels must have the human vessel's permission in order to occupy them, and neither Sam and Dean are willing to say yes. This is the premise of this season, for the angels to complete their destiny by completing the Apacolypse, and the brothers attempting to avert it. At this time, Castiel has fallen from grace and is no longer allowed into Heaven. Although he still has many angelic powers, he has lost some of them. In their quest, the boys run up against the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, which consists of War, Famine, Pestilence, and Death, as well as the "regular" creatures they encounter along the way. In the end, the only way to defeat "destiny" is for them to open Lucifer's cage, Sam agreeing to being Lucifer's vessel and taking control long enough to jump into the cage himself. In the end, the boys succeed in their mission. However, this results in the Archangel Michael, Lucifer, and their human vessels being locked in Lucifer's cage in Hell. Dean is now alone, and in keeping a promise he made to Sam, he goes to his lost love's and begins a new life, a normal one without hunting or monsters.
